Keep Calm & Keep Focussed for 2021

Blog-Image-2021

The title of this blog is certainly easier to type than it is to put into action BUT we need to at least try.

Plenty of us will be wondering how we get through this next stage; do we do less or more? To be honest, my initial reaction was to slump, I felt a bit low and wondered if the light was ever going to get any brighter in the tunnel we're all in. I gave myself a bit of a kick and realised how important it is to STAY FOCUSSED and STAY IN THE PRESENT. I'm genuinely trying hard not to think too far ahead and instead, I'm staying in the present moment - the here and now.

We will get back to normal one day, restrictions will ease and if I fast forwarded myself to that day, I asked myself how that would look? Did I want to spend this lockdown inactive, absent from practise, becoming rusty with my game? What would this look like to me when lockdown ends - not great! I want to come out the blocks, feel better, get fitter, make time for my game because let's face it, that's something we all have in abundance right now - TIME. What steps have I taken this year so far? Here goes:

  1. I'm mid way through Dry January! Yes, that's right, DRY JANUARY! Believe me, I've questioned this decision many times so far this month but am glad to report, Rona and I are sticking with it, feeling brighter, more focussed and energetic (most of the time!).
  2. I'm working out at home a lot more than what I did before; having a spin bike in the house is very convenient and am finding it increasingly difficult to come up with excuses not to do it.
  3. I'm heading to the driving range more often - taking my sons with me to hit balls and start to focus on what the golfing season may look like for us.
  4. I'm making various plans for the year ahead in business which gives me great excitement - let's just hope these plans can actually take off this year.

These are just some of the actions I'm taking so far this year - what about you? What plans have you put in place to keep active and healthy?

If you're keen to stay active, keep the focus and make time for your golf and fitness right now, please read about my subscription based training which I've put together alongside local PT, Gordon Hill of Impact Fitness. Together, we've come up with some short, snappy videos which you can easily download to a tablet or device, take us with you to the driving range (one of the few things we can still do right now!) and GET TO WORK!

I'd encourage you to do what I did - press the fast forward button and put yourself at the beginning of the golfing season and picture what it would look like if you did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING? Then picture what it would look like if you KEPT THE FOCUS? I bet the two would look completely different!

The subscription is £50 for 5 coaching & fitness videos and you can sign up below - there is no expiry on these sessions, you'll have them forever for all the family too! These will be emailed to you via a secure login towards the end of w/c 18th January once the final edits have been done. Here is a sample of what lies ahead in the sessions:

Session 1 – TIME & HOW TO USE IT WISELY: Get the most out your game and know your limitations and how YOU can improve. Fitness we have a selection of golf specific mobility exercises for all ages.

Session 2 – HOW TO HIT MORE GREENS: Learn how to improve from 100 yards; improve set-up, swing shape, trajectory and course management. Fitness we have a selection of golf specific strength exercises - no equipment required.

Session 3 – DRIVE THE BALL FURTHER, REGARDLESS OF AGE, H'CAP/ABILITY: Benefits of Technology, Strength, Technique and Impact Position. Fitness - why is movement so important?

Session 4 – SKILLS FOR GOOD COURSE MANAGEMENT: Learn how to form a game plan that's right for YOU. What does this involve? Fitness a selection of stretching exercises to maintain flexibility.

Session 5 - SAVE SHOTS WITH A BETTER SHORT GAME: This part of the game is practised the least but will save you the most shots! Fitness & Nutrition we offer tips for general health & wellness.

We'll finish the course with a Live Zoom Q&A which will be scheduled in advance - date to be confirmed and will likely take place one evening towards the end of February.

Thanks and hope everyone continues to stay safe!

Best wishes for the New Year ahead to everyone.

Our Lockdown Journey & What The Future Holds

How do you begin to start lockdown?

Like many, my business closed on 23rd March and I had no clue what to expect or what I could deliver.  How could we golf from home?  How could we stay in touch with members from home?

After discussions with my wife, Rona, we decided to create a golfing platform from which members could engage, if they wanted to.  We were in essence going to create something out of absolutely nothing.  Some may say daunting but we thought it was exciting and kind of fun.  We became quickly familiar with the FREE APP, Zoom which I'm sure many of you will have heard of - we hadn't!

Three weekly sessions, Monday, Wednesday and Friday were formed for members to join in, log in and participate.  I provided structured coaching from the garden most days (if dry) to around 15 Zoomers!  The first session went well and from there, word spread and it quickly grew in numbers.  We began to banter with each other - we all said hello, had a quick chat then it was down to business - GOLF!  It became the highlight for me and many others every week.  For the avoidance of doubt, I DON'T have 150 yard driving range in my back garden - I have grass and a patio (that outdoor space got us through lockdown in many ways which we are so grateful to have had!), my two sons provided the camera work and behind the scenes support.  The rest was up to me to provide content and for the members to engage which they did!

After a few weeks, Zoom had grown to around 50 log-ins for most of the session and it was at that point, we decided to introduce a Guest Speaker slot on the Friday!  After the word got out who our speakers were, numbers grew again to around 115 people logging in - overall audience was around, 150!

Here's who we secured over these lockdown weeks ....

Richie Ramsay - European Tour Player : Bob MacIntyre, European Tour Player : John Paramor, Chief R&A Rules :  Gordon Hill, Personal Fitness Trainer : Iona Stephen, Sky Sports Presenter : Craig Connelly, European Tour Caddie to Martin Kaymer : Catriona Mattew, Solheim Cup Captain :  Paul McGinley, European Tour Player : Adrien Reitveld, Top Custom Fit Expert of TaylorMade : Our Greenstaff Peter & Andy of Whitecraigs Golf Club : Conor Finlay, R&A Rules : Dr John Mathers, Stirling University : Will Harvey, Top Vokey Wedge Expert of Titleist : Open Champion, Paul Lawrie!

Quite a line up!  Each week, I'd secure one of these guys, prepare my Q&A and then have to pinch myself half the time as I couldn't quite believe what was happening.  We heard wonderful stories of Seve, how Paul Lawrie won The Open, how to get our way round the golf course positively, Tour chat, the structure and bounce off Vokey Wedges, the importance of Club fitting and MUCH MORE!!.

Unprecedented but surreal times for me and for us all but we became a team - a Zoom Team and a great one at that!

It evolved even further as we turned this initiative on its head by introducing a minimum 'donation' fee - not to me, but to our much loved and treasured NHS staff who have worked tirelessly throughout this period - and continue to do so today.

How much money did we THINK we could raise?  The answer, originally, was £2,500.

How much did we ACTUALLY raise?  £12,525.

WOW.  How could this be possible?  It was possible and it just goes to show, anything can happen.  All monies raised have gone towards and continue to be spent, on a staff wellness station within the Critical Care Unit of the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow (staff receive a delivery each week of soft drinks, snacks and goodies to get them through the days); we will also be donating to the East of Scotland, Edinburgh Royal Infirmary; outdoor garden furniture for patients and their families to enjoy some nice fresh air after recovering in The Critical Care Unit.  We are about to order this shortly and are excited to do this!

The whole process - from start to finish - has been so rewarding for me as a Golfer and small business owner, not to mention as a father, husband and friend - to give back and support such a good cause has been tremendously humbling for me and my family.

Now that golf is easing back, albeit with restrictions, we can all get back to seeing our golfing pals (in 2-balls) and getting a game in.  What kind of shape will our golf be in?  Well that depends on whether you've tuned into my Zoom classes or not!!  Jokes aside, we will all struggle to get back - some flexibility issues, some technical issues BUT the most important thing is WE'RE BACK!

To all the Zoomers who participated and became part of a close team - THANK YOU!  Watch the space though as Zoom will be returning and details will be posted shortly on how you can re-engage, or engage for the first time in online golf!

In the meantime - enjoy your golf, appreciate your golf and most important, be patient with your progress. One thing is for sure - ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!!

Skechers Launch Torque Twist Golf Shoes

Skechers torque twist golf shoes

After launching their new footwear range for 2020 earlier this year, Skechers Go Golf are back again with a brand new men's shoe that is said to build upon the brand's aim of producing exciting designs with plenty of game-improving technologies. Skechers employ the feedback of their tour players, including Matt Kuchar, Colin Montgomerie and Russell Knox, for each new release and this has continued to produce the brand new Torque Twist shoe, which features a new Dial Closure system similar to the BOA system. The Skechers Torque Twist shoe has a synthetic upper that features a unique rain jacket construction of molded panels that provide complete waterproof protection. No overlapping panels or stiching to allow water to seep in. Read more about Skechers new Go Golf Footwear range for 2020 in this review here
